Ricardo Certification Iberia based in Madrid is part of the Ricardo Rail Division, a world class leader delivering engineering services in the rail world. Whilst the work directly contracted to Ricardo Certification Iberia is certification and assessment work (NoBo, DeBo, ISA, ASBO, etc), the work for Ricardo Rail is rail engineering (and sometimes non-railway) consultancy and design, which engineers are encouraged to participate in.

Ricardo Certification Iberia provides independent assurance services, including NoBo, DeBo, AsBo and ISA, across signalling, infrastructure and rolling stock to clients including infrastructure managers, train manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and maintainers. Our goal is to be the natural choice provider of independent assurance services to the global rail industry. Ricardo Certification is a Notified Body for the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs), an Assessment Body for the European Common Safety Method (CSM-RA) and an Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) for signalling systems. The Business Manager reports to the Certification Director and has the operational responsibility for the Spanish Ricardo Certification business. The role is held accountable for process conformance, impartiality, to achieve the targets for profit, order intake, revenue, cash flow, head count and to ensure client satisfaction through effective project delivery.

Accountability / Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow the Independent Assurance business in Spain
  • Overall responsibility for managing and achieving budgeted business line targets including (but not limited to) P&L, order intake, pipeline and working capital. Ensure all P&L activity is reported to the Business Line Director as per Ricardo’s internal accounting deadlines
  • Act as Bid Manager, Project Director and/or Project Manager for appropriate projects
  • Oversee delivery of projects in the business area
  • Undertake fee earning work by supporting technical projects
  • Where required negotiate contracts and close sales deals
  • Manage project performance so that it matches or exceeds approved margins
  • Define the resources in terms of services, capability and numbers required to deliver current projects and to meet forecasts
  • Proactively manage employee performance through constant feedback
  • Ensure their team delivers to agreed performance targets, team and individual objectives
  • Deliver team utilisation targets and proactively manage over and under-utilisation via effective consultation with other Business Managers
  • Ensure technical delivery is in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards

Personal Profile:

  • A degree qualified engineer with industry and business experience in the rail sector in Spain, preferably in Independent Assurance Services
  • People management experience
  • An appreciation of all rail disciplines and competencies
  • Proven experience of managing a P&L successfully
  • Experience of working in a rail consultancy business
  • Self-starter, ability to create opportunities, convince others of them and turn them into profitable business
  • Proven ability to manage and deliver projects on time and budget
  • Proven experience of effective performance management of direct reports
  • Intercultural sensitivity experienced in working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to present to a high professional standard, both orally and in writing, to individuals and groups
  • Fluent in Spanish and English – able to negotiate and present complex technical items as well as contractual arrangements in either language
