Job Description

UK Graduate Railway Engineering Consultant

We provide our clients –  train operators, manufacturers, maintenance companies, infrastructure companies and industry regulators – with specialist technical support to help improve  performance across every aspect of their operations. We do work for a huge range of railway companies; from the large, such as Network Rail, Hitachi, Porterbrook, Angel Trains and Transport for London, to the new, innovative suppliers such as Riding Sunbeams and WaveTrain. Why work for one railway company when you could work with them all?

As Consultants we support clients to solve problems that they cannot solve themselves. We get to work on a wide range of challenges and use our collective team intellect and experience to provide pragmatic and technically sound solutions.

Start your career with Ricardo, a consultancy that has integrity and passion for the environment and the rail industry. We empower, develop, and trust you to deliver your best work. We’ll provide a culture and support that will enable you to evolve, grow and succeed.

Working here

Our UK rail team is looking for talented, ambitious graduates with the potential to become technical consultants and future leaders of the business.

This is an exciting and rewarding place to work, with the opportunity to make a difference. You will have a fantastic opportunity to develop your career with us through our broad range of projects, mentoring opportunities and a personalised approach to your learning and development.

We are keen to hear from people who are driven, with ambition and a flair for innovative thinking. Our people are important to us and we take pride in our wellbeing programmes and policies that support individuals including flexible working, carers policy, mental health first aiders and support through our extensive Employee Assistance programme. We are committed to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion; we are a signatory of the Women in Rail EDI Charter.

We will nominate a mentor to support with your development and also  to help you meet the required competencies for CEng registration.  Your mentor will support you in identifying needs and opportunities to ensure that this happens.

The role

We are seeking an intelligent and self-motivated engineering graduate to join the team as a Graduate consultant. This role will provide the perfect first step into a consultancy career in an exciting and rapidly changing sector. From day one you'll be part of a team supporting more senior consultants in delivering projects to clients.  The successful applicant will have excellent numeracy and analytical skills gained from an engineering background, strong writing skills, a proactive, organised approach and a commitment to producing high quality work with a high level of attention to detail.

As a Graduate Consultant, you will manage your time across several projects, contributing at all phases - from supporting the preparation of proposals to win new contracts, through delivering the project and liaising with clients. You will be responsible for the quality and delivery of your work, and liaise with other consultants to incorporate your contribution into wider project outputs.

We will also devote time to help you acquire valuable client management techniques and important ‘soft’ skills – delivering presentations, project management, people management etc. – to build up your commercial strengths.

Global Opportunties

You will gain all the benefits you can expect from a career in a respected technical consulting organisation like Ricardo, whether that involves taking advantage of opportunities to work on international assignments; a period embedded ‘full time’ on-site within client project teams; or just by being part of a global community of engineering graduates developing their knowledge and careers together. We have teams working on railway projects in China, Australia, Middle East, Netherlands, Canada and the US.

As part of the Ricardo Group we are also closely aligned with the Energy and Environment Business and Automotive Business and there are opportunities to work across these teams to gain broader experience.

Joining our team

You need to have:

  • A relevant engineering degree such as electrical,  mechanical, systems or railway engineering discipline (or working towards that).
  • An interest in the rail sector.
  • The desire to work on a variety of projects in multidisciplinary teams.
  • The ambition and confidence to become a technical consultant and a future leader.
  • The conviction that you can make a real difference to peoples’ lives and their environment through your expertise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with client-focus and a hands-on approach.
  • A drive for continuous self-development.
  • Excellent organisational/planning skills
  • Ability to work in a consultancy environment
