The Water & Environment practice of Ricardo Energy & Environment offers a comprehensive range of specialist services within the environmental consultancy sector. Nationally and internationally recognised for our expertise in planning and overseeing complex and sensitive projects, our skills have been utilised by a wide range of clients within the public and private sectors including the European Commission, government, water companies and developers.



Our Water & Environment practice has a strong project portfolio and we are looking for an experienced Marine Ecologist at Senior Consultant grade to join our team in Manchester, London or Bristol. You will join colleagues in providing technical support on a variety of water management and ecology projects, across a wide range of clients in the water, developer and public sectors. You will be expected to contribute as part of a wider national team, working closely with colleagues throughout the UK. A particular feature of this role will be to help our Business Area Managers develop new business in marine ecology.


We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Experience in marine ecological data acquisition, coastal surveys, analysis and interpretation.
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience of coastal and estuarine benthic community assessment.
  • Experience in Environmental Impact Assessment and ideally Habitats Regulation Assessment.
  • Marine licensing and permitting experience.
  • Ability to work with a range of relevant statistical packages used in marine ecology (e.g. Primer, PERMANOVA).
  • A demonstrable talent for developing and winning new work in marine ecology.
  • Strong report writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas and resolutions.
  • A degree in a relevant subject, such as Ecology, Biology or Zoology.
  • GIS experience.
  • An ability to balance multiple projects with excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Willingness to work across a range of water related projects


  • Working knowledge of the Water Framework Directive (including its transitional waters classification tools) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
  • The ability to contribute to providing robust and innovative solutions to customer problems.
  • Offshore coastal survey experience would be advantageous.
  • Some freshwater ecology knowledge and experience.
  • Good working knowledge of marine habitat mapping protocols (e.g. EUNIS, Marine Habitat Classification)
  • Microalgae/plankton experience.

  • Excellent team working skills together with strong communication skills and a close attention to detail.
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated to thrive in this busy and demanding commercial environment.
  • A good appreciation of health and safety hazards and responsibilities in aquatic fieldwork.
  • Competent in the Microsoft Office Package.  
  • Strong organisational skills.
