Ricardo Rail is a global multi-disciplinary rail consultancy providing services in expert advice and independent assurance across the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia where we employ c500 consultants working on rolling stock, infrastructure and independent assurance projects.

Our UK Rail business employs c120 consultants in offices in London, Preston, York, Bristol and Derby, which is our head office.

We provide consultancy and independent assurance services, including NoBo, DeBo, AsBo and ISA, across infrastructure and rolling stock to a clients including infrastructure managers, train manufactures, equipment manufacturers and maintainers.

Due to continued growth we are now looking to strengthen our CCS capability to lead the growth of this business area and support the delivery of existing and new projects. The roles we are seeking to fill are for Consultants with Signalling / Telecoms backgrounds who will be able to provide specialist CCS support to our Consultancy, Independent Assurance and Products activities. 

You will work on the delivery of projects, providing expert advice on signalling & telecoms systems and safety engineering services, delivering to a Ricardo project team or directly to a client, as required.

As we also undertake assurance work, a good knowledge of compliance with standards such as the CCS TSI, safety risk assessments in accordance with the CSM for risk evaluation and assessment and EN50126/8/9 would be an advantage, although training in these areas can be provided to the right candidate.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  • Provide expertise and advice to Ricardo Rail and external clients on good engineering practice, potential solutions, railway standards, EU and UK Rail Legislation.
  • Support and contribute to the delivery of projects, including attending meetings with clients and other stakeholders such as: ORR, DfT, NR, LU, Compatibility Forum and SRP, Tier 1 suppliers, etc.
  • Liaise with consultants and contractors on project issues, and interface with clients on both technical and contractual matters.
  • Ability to manage and lead projects as required, controlling budgets and quality / timeliness of deliverables, working with resource managers to utilise the right people and manage client relationships.
  • Develop proposals and undertake business development activities to enhance client relationships and secure further work to achieve sales targets.
  • Interface with domain experts from other disciplines within Ricardo Rail; for example Railway Operations, Rolling Stock, Power Supply, and Civil Engineering.
  • Oversee and review the work of other consultants, including taking responsibility for their technical development if required.
  • Lead the independent assurance (NoBo/DeBo/AsBo/ISA) on projects.
  • Represent Ricardo Rail at industry events and committees.
  • Maintain your own competence and knowledge at the forefront of the railway signalling and telecoms industry.

Qualifications required:

  • Degree educated, or equivalent, in a suitable engineering discipline
  • Membership of a relevant Professional Institution (membership of the IRSE is desirable).
  • For Senior and Principal Consultant levels we would expect the candidate to be a Chartered Engineer, or equivalent, or able to demonstrate that they could achieve that based on their education and experience.

Technical expertise & skills required:

  • Experience of Signalling and/or operational and retail telecoms and/or Railway Control systems (including digital technologies such as GSM-R, transmission systems, ETCS/ERTMS or CBTC and Traffic Management Systems)
  • Experience of business development and client management.
  • Engineering Management from proposal to closure.
  • Application of applicable standards (including railway standards, UK and EU Rail Regulations including the CCS TSI).
  • Safety engineering (The Yellow Book, iESM, Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation & Assessment and equivalent) and EN50126/8/9.
  • We are interested in candidates with experience of any or all of: system and product specification / development; application design; system integration; test & commissioning and Asset Management. Our activities cover all of these areas.
  • Analytical and methodical problem solving.

  • Versatile and adaptable, able to operate under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Flexibility to travel in the UK and short durations overseas if required.
