Ricardo’s rail division is 600 person, multi-disciplinary railway consultancy providing expert advice and independent assurance services throughout the world.

We are seeking to appoint a highly experienced, industry-acknowledged Business Manager to develop our already strong Hong Kong team.

The essence of the Business Manager’s role is to manage a team of experts, maintain and develop a well-stocked pipeline of consultancy opportunities and deliver a project portfolio with the right level of technical integrity in accordance with cost and time expectations.

The Successful Candidate will…

  • Be expected to grow Ricardo’s market presence in Hong Kong
  • Extend Ricardo’s local client base and network
  • Deliver the expected financial performance required from a Consultancy the size of the Hong Kong operations
  • Possess the track record of delivering complex railway systems engineering/assurance projects for clients including one or more of the following: major manufacturers, railway operators and major project organisations;
  • Be competent in building and leading a high-performance team


Accountability / Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver budgeted financial targets, including P&L, order intake and working capital
  • Liaise with other Business Managers, Ricardo divisions and Ricardo Group functions as necessary to ensure consistency in development and delivery of business/commercial services to internal and external clients
  • Lead Bid Development and maintain senior customer relationships
  • Ensure projects are delivered to high technical standards and meet client expectations
  • Implement technical processes that ensures consistent technical delivery
  • Identify and investigate (technical) developments in the market and translate them to services Ricardo can exploit within its customer base
  • Champion the generation of new ideas from the team through Ricardo’s impetus programme
  • Manage a high performing team through effective coaching, mentoring, performance management and competence development; and actively contribute to optimising operational processes
  • Comply with Ricardo Rail’s Health and Safety requirements with respect to their personal health and safety and, as manager, to be responsible and accountable within their respective areas for: the management and control of risk, demonstrating visible safety leadership and ensuring implementation of health and safety systems and compliance;



In order to be successful, you need to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Seasoned railway and/or systems engineering/assurance professional with minimum five years of experience at senior management level within a railway consulting environment
  • Deep expertise in one or more railway engineering disciplines (e.g. functional safety, RAM, software assurance and system integration) as well as a broad application knowledge of most other systems engineering disciplines
  • A broad appreciation of all rail disciplines and competencies
  • A skilled producer of high-quality client deliverables, including proposals, reports and presentations, and able to demonstrate success at executive and senior management level relationship building
  • Strong commercial acumen reflected in a track record of delivering projects that minimise commercial risk, fulfil client timescales, effectively exploit revenue opportunities
  • Proven experience of effective performance management
  • Ability to devise, develop and implement efficient and effective business processes
  • Proven planning, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Think ‘outside the box’ to produce innovative resourcing solutions
  • Adaptable and easily switch from vastly different activities with ease and set priorities to achieve business goals
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced leadership team with an inherent need to be highly mobile throughout Asia as clients require
  • Fluent English is essential. Fluent Cantonese and/or mandarin is an advantage
