An opportunity exists within the Analysis Capability Group for a Structural Analysis Engineer to deliver on-going client projects supporting a number of design and development programmes.  The solutions proposed guide the clients’ product development and enable the interaction between different components / technologies to be understood, whilst maintaining performance and cost targets.


You can expect to participate in a wide range of projects across many powertrain and vehicle types and market sectors as well as in the aerospace and defence area, energy sector and for industrial applications. The role involves managing the targeted use of CAE tools and testing work to provide technical solutions to clients. The role will encompass all powertrain types, with predominantly conventional combustion engines and transmissions for vehicle, off-road and stationary applications.


A Senior structural analysis engineer is required to carry out a range of FE-based analyses and simulations of combustion engines and transmissions which include but are not limited to:

  • FE-based analyses of engine components to predict structural performance and durability.
  • Thermal analyses and optimization of powertrains incl. combustion engines.
  • Structural analyses of transmission assemblies and components.

The Structural Analysis Engineer will be responsible for delivery of engineering solutions in line with project timescales and budgets as well as liaison with team members and customers in the achievement of targets.


Working in conjunction with engineers across Ricardo locations around the world, you will perform the following tasks:

  • To work on engineering activities for ICE and transmission component analysis and optimisation prototype through to full series production on client projects.
  • Responsible for working closely with a design and development team to assess functionality and performance of the developed systems, discuss and agree on requirements and targets.
  • Technical reporting - interpretation of results and suggestions for improvements.
  • Work to internal and client quality procedures and validation processes.
  • Support the development of future products and services, assisting in the development of new techniques.

Required skills and experience

  • You will ideally be a graduate mechanical / automotive / aerospace engineer with experience of simulation and/or testing.
  • Minimum degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline (e.g. electrical and electronic engineering / mechanical engineering / physics / computer science / software engineering / maths / control engineering).
  • A sound knowledge of ICE and transmission technology.
  • Experience with FE codes (e.g. Realis FEARCE, Abaqus, Optistruct).
  • Experience with using office tools e.g. Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Have minimum 5 years’ experience within the area of FE analysis.
  • Able to work independently, setting task priorities to deliver the required project deliverables on time.
  • Must be able to communicate and make presentations with a high degree of clarity, having the ability to write and deliver technical presentations to both internal project teams and clients, at gateway and management reviews.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and attention to detail.
