The role
We are looking for a Senior Energy Engineer / Senior Energy Economist (suitable for those with some post-graduate experience in the energy sector) to join our Sustainable Energy Systems team. This role will provide a stepping stone into your engineering and consultancy career in an exciting and rapidly changing sector.

 

The team 
The Sustainable Energy Systems team comprises a group of highly experienced professionals specialising in engineering techno-economic, and management consultancy services for the energy sector, with particular emphasis on the power sector. We cover power generation, transmission and distribution planning, electricity tariff and affordability studies, renewable energy integration, regulation, policy, power market design and “smart grid” innovation projects. We are a respected consultancy in the hydrogen sector and our depth and breadth of expertise and diverse portfolio provides potential candidates with a unique opportunity to work on such projects across the globe. We are a committed team of like-minded professionals with a growing portfolio of energy technology, policy and strategy projects. 

 

Key responsibilities

From day one, you will be part of a team supporting senior consultants in delivering projects to our clients. Successful applicants will have strong numeracy, analytical and communication skills together with a proactive, organised approach and a pride in the quality of their work. Over time you will be expected to develop a strong understanding of the energy sector - including strategic, technical, commercial and regulatory aspects. 

 
You will contribute to research and analysis that underpins our consultancy work. You will manage your time across several projects, contributing in all phases - from researching and analysing information and data, through providing key contributions to the development of techno-economic and financial models, to contributing to reports that are delivered to clients, and supporting the preparation of proposals to win new contracts. You will be responsible for the quality and delivery of your work and will liaise with other consultants and teams to incorporate your contribution into wider project outputs. 

You will be supported throughout your career with us in your professional development, to ensure you have the support and tools you need to deliver your role to a high quality, and to support your development into the future.  

 

Examples of projects you will be working on include

  • Tariff and Cost of Service studies for the power sector
  • Power market design studies
  • Feasibility and implementation studies for renewable energy projects.
  • Hydrogen strategy
  • Developing technical and economic power sector regulatory frameworks

Our projects span across UK, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, Caribbean, Middle East, and Australia.

 

Skills and experience

The position would suit candidates with:

 

Essential

  • A strong degree in electrical engineering / power systems and/or energy economics.
  • Post-graduate experience working in an energy consultancy environment.
  • Professional experience in at least one of the following regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, Caribbean.
  • Good understanding of power networks and power systems, power sector regulation, electricity markets.
  • Strong Skills in Excel, including data manipulation and modelling.
  • Some experience successfully leading teams and managing complex projects.
  • Passion for renewable energy, energy system innovation and sustainability.
  • The ability to effectively communicate and interact with colleagues and clients.
  • The ability to breakdown complex research questions, think creatively and solve novel problems.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.

Desirable

  • Fluency in French or Portuguese.
  • Some experience using Helioscope ©, PV/Syst ©, Homer Pro ©, DigSilent ©, PSS/E ©, Powerworld ©, and/or PLEXOS.
  • Some experience working on projects funded by multi-lateral and bilateral agencies such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, or the Asian Development Bank.
  • Some experience writing compelling bids for customers in the context of open or restricted tender processes.
  • Professional experience in two or more of the following regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, Caribbean.
