The role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Rolling Stock Engineer to join our consultancy team. The role involves delivering a broad range of consultancy tasks in the field of railway vehicle mechanical engineering. If you are an experienced rolling stock engineer with a strong passion for providing excellent service and looking for your next move, we’d like to hear from you.

For this role you will have more than five-years’ experience working in the rail industry for a manufacturer, maintainer, operator or consulting firm. Having done so, you will be able to demonstrate successful delivery across a diverse range of stock engineering projects.

In undertaking this role you will be expected to demonstrate sound engineering leadership and judgement, combined with the excellent verbal and written communication skills needed to support our customers.

Key competencies and experience

We encourage you to apply for this role if you can demonstrate:

  • Rail vehicle mechanical experience across a wide range of systems which may include bearings and transmissions, bogies and suspension, brakes, engines, HVAC, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, structures, vehicle/track interfaces, wheelsets etc.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant Rail Industry Standards, Technical Specifications for Interoperability and National Technical Specification Notices.
  • Experience of undertaking site visits to inspect rail vehicles, carry out investigations and incorporate results into formal outputs.
  • Experience of vehicle testing and failure investigation.
  • Experience of specifying, planning and overseeing modifications to rolling stock systems and sub-systems.
  • An aptitude and willingness for mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Degree or equivalent technical qualification, with experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartership of a recognised Professional Engineering Body.

We recognise that you may not be able to fulfil all of the requirements above. If there are some gaps in your knowledge and experience but you are able to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and an appetite for learning, we’d still like to hear from you.

As a senior rolling stock engineer your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Understand customer requirements and aspirations to identify and agree scope.
  • Prepare high-quality and commercially sound proposals in response to customer requirements.
  • Lead the delivery of projects, with responsibility to our customers for delivering to timescale, quality and budget.
  • Provide guidance and leadership regarding vehicle systems to clients and other Ricardo teams.
  • Maintain your own competence and knowledge to remain at the vanguard of rolling stock engineering best practice.
  • Communicate with clients, regulatory bodies and other project stakeholders and, in doing so, promote Ricardo and its services.
