Job Description

Through on-the-job training, performs a variety of entry-level engineering tasks of analysis, design, or testing nature. Assignments are selected to provide practical, sequential experience in the application of engineering theory and principles. Assignments begin with specific routine tasks and become increasingly difficult or complex. The Associate Engineer depends on others for instruction, guidance, and direction.

Essential Functions:

  • Applies theoretical knowledge and engineering techniques to the solution of basic analytical engineering problems
  • Prepares concept and detailed drawings, surveys, parts list, routine analytical design calculations, simulation, and CAD development
  • Participates in experimental investigations, participates in recording, plotting and performing preliminary analysis of results
  • Confers with research and more senior engineers to prepare modifications to drawings, specifications, calculations, test work, results and reports
  • Develops simple simulation models including the derivation of basic governing equations, and/or executes simulations implemented in commonly used system modeling packages such as Simulink
  • Operates basic electronic test equipment to carry out basic troubleshooting of laboratory setups
  • Sets up or directs the setup of bench testing of control system hardware
  • Tunes classical control law parameters (i.e., PID gains, lead/lag compensation, etc.) to achieve response, stability, accuracy, robustness requirements
  • Writes basic computer code to represent control algorithms, models or to carry out simple calculations on data, both static and dynamic
  • Develops control laws based on classical techniques, either simulation or experimentally
  • Supports the implementation of control systems in hardware including the specification and procurement of actuators and sensors, procurement of electronic controller hardware, wiring diagrams and wiring harnesses procurement
  • Analyzes dynamic system response data against performance requirements
  • Monitors own work to ensure quality; looks for ways to improve and promote quality
  • Meets productivity standards; strives to increase productivity, completes work in a timely manner

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering
  • No experience required
  • Internship experience preferred
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and criteria relating to engineering standards
  • Strong but customer-aware negotiation skills; ability to influence
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and listening skills
  • Ability to perform algebraic and trigonometric computations applied to engineering
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic and matrixed organization
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task
  • Excellent presentation skills and communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, Access and Power Point
