As the Controls – Principal Engineer you will be responsible for leading and directing the controls team within the US, this reports directly to the Software, Control and Calibration (SCC) Capability Director.

The position requires a technical background in automotive controls and experience in product development. In addition, you will understand how to develop a technical and commercial offering with a customer, and how this will be delivered by Ricardo.

Essential Functions:

  • To lead a team of control engineers based in DTC (open to other locations), and to lead technical teams delivering client projects:
  • Technical leadership of a team of engineers involved in development of control solutions
  • Day to day team leadership and allocation of control team members across projects
  • Recruitment and team development to meet project workload and planned expansion
  • Mentoring and career path development of team
  • Development of tools, processes and methodologies; drive the development of future products and services
  • Interface directly with clients on technical issues
  • Focus on delivery of projects on-time and on-budget
  • Technical negotiations with clients and support of commercial discussions
  • Support of the sales teams in the development of market opportunities through client interaction, proposal support and roadmap development
  • Promotion of capability throughout Ricardo’s global customer base
  • Maintain awareness of the latest technology and industry trends
  • Delivers superior levels of customer service to both internal and external customers while demonstrating Ricardo’s core values of respect, integrity, creativity and innovation, and passion
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific, technical, or engineering subject; Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Ten years progressively more responsible experience including engineering solutions for the product from design to application in similar industries
  • Ten years extensive leadership experience; highly professional in appearance and approach; exudes expertise and credibility
  • Extensive technical experience in control systems for relevant applications, such as: xEV powertrains, power electronics, motors and drives, engines, transmissions, battery management systems, advanced thermal systems, fuel cell systems, OBD, etc., including demonstrated ability in leading teams in the delivery of projects
  • Wide ranging knowledge of automotive powertrain systems
  • Analytical approach to developing controls algorithms in an automotive environment
  • Fluent in a model-based development languages, especially Matlab/Simulink
  • Ability to train junior engineers and develop an effective team
  • Drive and commitment to deliver technically challenging projects
  • Commercial awareness for preparation of projects and proposal development

Desirable Experience:

  • Advanced control methodologies (e.g. Model Predictive Control, Optimal Control, Reference Governor control, Kalman Filters, etc.)
  • Systems engineering
  • Functional safety
  • Knowledge & experience of ASPICE
