Role Title: HR Manager

Location: Flexible – London, Harwell (Oxfordshire), Hybrid

Salary: £54,440 - £60,000 + £3,000 flexible benefits + bonus

Reporting to the HR Director, you’ll lead and inspire a team of 5 HRBPs’ providing operational and day-to-day support to a range of business functions. Partnering with senior leaders, you’ll build organizational capacity and operational excellence in order to execute our HR strategy. With an unwavering focus on supporting the business objectives, you’ll lead by example, driving key initiatives around wellbeing and diversity as well as personally providing operational support to colleagues in areas such as employee engagement, employee relations, and capability building.


You’ll work closely alongside our resourcing, HR operations and learning teams and build relationships with HR colleagues and stakeholders across the wider Ricardo business units in the UK, Europe, and Australia, in support of our growth plans.


You’ll be experienced in providing legal guidance and advice to employees on policy and procedure and be well versed across all areas of the HR lifecycle from induction and probation to PDR, salary review, and succession planning. Your ability to use data and analysis to inform business and HR performance will also be key, as will your ability to mentor and develop your team.


To be successful, you'll need strong analytical skills, a natural eye for detail, and the ability to translate business plans and goals into operational strategies that achieve results.

You'll need excellent communication skills and high levels of personal integrity. You'll have demonstrated strategic thinking and planning ability, the ability to work through complex problems, and the agility to function in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.


Key accountabilities:

  • Regular liaison with key stakeholders – Directors and Managers- to ensure that the service delivered by the HRBP team meets, and ideally exceeds expectations, and is tailored to suit the differing leadership styles and business needs. This liaison includes sharing best practice from one area of the business to another to optimise consistency, business performance, employee engagement, and inclusion.
  • Understanding business priorities and focus HR support where it is most required in liaison with HR Director and wider Senior Leadership Team.
  • Work in partnership with the HR Operations Manager, HR Director, and Talent Acquisition Manager to manage resources, overcome operational challenges and seek the best solutions to provide a high-quality HR service.
  • Work in partnership with the Communications Manager to ensure messages are clear, timely, and relevant during the year.
  • Taking a strategic lead on HR projects as agreed.
  • In partnership with the recruitment team, ensure that hiring managers understand and adhere to best practice recruitment protocols and are supported to resolve the global resourcing needs effectively and efficiently. This may include providing in-practice support with developing job profiles, training, and interviewing as appropriate.
  • Leading HR Business Partners in the consistent implementation and embedding of activity associated with achieving our strategic goals. Examples include: supporting employees to engage with high-performance tools and techniques; adherence to ‘effective’ and ‘most promising’ actions to minimise Gender Pay Gap – in partnership with the Recruitment Team; establishing coaching communities and mentoring relationships etc.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement programmes, routinely engaging with the wider internal and external HR communities to share knowledge and support Group-wide HR projects and activity

Essential requirements:

  • Chartered MCIPD is essential, at Level 7 CPD Diploma
  • Proven operational and strategic HR management experience
  • Up to date knowledge of employment legislation and best practice
  • Excellent attention to detail in terms of data, HR metrics, systems, and processes
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, influencing, and presentation skills
  • Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships and build networks with others including Senior Managers and Directors
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring ideally with a recognized qualification
  • Pragmatic and commercially minded, with the ability to quickly identify solutions and act on them
  • Ability to test and challenge assumptions and make decisions confidently
  • Composed, professional, committed, and a team player with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Experience of positively influencing change
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced commercially minded organisation.

Given the international nature of our business, a second language would be desirable as would experience of a professional services /consultancy business.
