Due to continued growth, Ricardo Rail are looking to strengthen their team to support the delivery of existing and new projects, especially those relating to software safety. 

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Software Safety Consultant to work on a wide range of safety engineering projects specifically focused on software systems as part of the Safety Team as part of the Safety, Security and Human Factors Team.  Ideally you will have 10+ years of experience with software in complex/real-time safety critical systems, train control systems or equivalent in other industry such as aircraft, medical, nuclear or automotive.

Job Description

As a Senior Software Safety Consultant you will be responsible for delivering safety/ software engineering projects to clients in compliance with relevant international standards such EN50126, EN50129, EN50128 or IEC 61508 and/or CSM-RA. You will also be lead and input to proposals with novel solutions to technically challenging client needs. You will also review, produce software deliverables / artefacts, and undertake independent assessment of software projects in accordance with the requirements of EN50128.

You will meet and develop relationships with key engineering leaders and rail decision makers as well as enhancing your own technical capabilities. In a client facing role, you will be expected to combine sound engineering knowledge and judgement, with excellent communication skills, to deliver high-quality technical service to clients.

You will also lead proposals with novel solutions to technically challenging client needs, drawing upon your formal engineering training and your experience to-date.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Software Safety Consultant your key responsibilities relate to bidding, winning and delivering commercially successful projects. In doing so, you will:

  • Deliver software safety engineering for a wide range of railway systems (including signalling) and rolling stock projects to ensure compliance with the relevant standards and/ or CSM-RA.
  • Conduct safety verification and validation review tasks of:
  • Plans governing the software development lifecycle (e.g. software quality assurance plans, software development plans, software verification and validation plans).
  • Software and safety artifacts and ensuring adherence to the safety methodology and strategy.
  • Safety Integrity Level allocation to SW safety functions.
  • Outcome of the SW Test Specification review.
  • Software Error Effect Analysis (SEEA).
  • Software Critical Code Review Report.
  • Manage and deliver larger projects, working with clients to understand their objectives and desired outcomes for each project.
  • Lead business development and write proposals; liaising with clients to secure work. In doing so, identify potential risks, devise method statements, specify clear acceptance criteria, and generate resource and cost estimates.
  • Represent Ricardo Rail at industry events and committees.
  • Support process development, guidance document creation and white papers
  • Ensure overall client satisfaction targets are met throughout the project lifecycle
  • Proactive liaise with clients, regulatory bodies and other project stakeholders.

Technical expertise & skills required:

We consider it essential that you can demonstrate:

  • Detailed knowledge of software safety lifecycle, system and software requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis, software architecture and design, software verification and validation.
  • Familiarity with EN 50128, other CENELEC EN 5012x suite standards and other equivalent software safety standards (IEC61508, IEEE-STD-1228, DO-178), software assurance methods and techniques, SIL allocation
  • Ability to read and understand source code written in various programming languages and verify correct, complete, and consistent implementation of software requirements.
  • Ability to present technical information to customers in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms.
  • Define or propose updates of customers processes and standards covering the work and its products based on the knowledge of systems/software engineering and/or technical speciality.
  • Ensure software development is planned implemented in accordance with applicable standards and principles.
  • Lead technical discussions, technical solution presentation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Project management skills to deliver on a range of projects to quality, time and budget
  • Ability to write well structured, high quality reports with clear objectives and conclusions, including an ability to tailor your style to meet client requirements and deliver high quality reports with clear objectives and conclusions.
  • Ability to work in a consultancy environment including the need for flexibility and client-satisfaction. This includes understanding client needs and issues, developing requirements and solutions, managing client expectations and delivering high quality outputs. Your experience does not need to be within a consultancy environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the capability to engage positively with clients and colleagues as part of a consultancy project team, and to influence decision-makers. This includes the ability to present technical information to customers in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms.
  • Ideally, have hands-on experience with software safety requirements and design analyses (using DOORS, JIRA, REQTIFY, FTA, FFMEA & SEEA tools and and techniques), static code reviews, test analysis, coding standard

Qualifications required:

B.Sc. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
