Laboratory Technician

Location: Ludbridge Mill, Harwell, Oxfordshire

Salary: £20,800 - £24,000 per annum

The Air Quality Team within our Environment & Policy Practice employs over 130 consultants, scientists and engineers develop and apply state-of-the-art tools and techniques to deliver effective solutions to difficult air quality problems.  Our team includes knowledge leaders on air quality measurement, inventory development, modelling, exposure assessment, chemical modelling, public health impacts, information management and data visualisation. Our clients benefit from the full range of air quality services that result in solutions and strategies tailored to addressing challenges at local, city and national scales. We deliver hundreds of projects every year, to public and private sector clients in the UK and overseas, including flagship programmes such as the UK’s national air quality measurement network (AURN), the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) and the annual national scale air quality modelling assessment on behalf of UK Government.

With growing pressure on businesses and governments around the world to meet stringent standards and regulations, the ability to assess air quality is an essential requirement.  Ricardo Energy & Environment’s experts help industry and government comply with legislation, supporting organizations through our key services – such as monitoring and quantifying air quality in a wide variety of scenarios and equipment calibration (essential for demonstrating to regulatory authorities the validity of measurements). We have ambitious growth plans and are now seeking to strengthen our laboratory and technical support team at our Ludbridge Mill Laboratory.

Role Purpose / Key Accountabilities:

Within our laboratories, you will ensure that processes are carried out to a high standard following documented procedures and that data are accurately recorded and made available to project managers and clients in a timely manner. Duties in support of several air quality monitoring networks, will include preparation and calibration of sampling equipment, receipt and cataloguing of samples, maintaining laboratory records and data analysis. Some occasional UK travel may be required.

Key competencies and experience:

  • Good numerical and computer literacy skills are essential;
  • Education to a minimum of National Diploma (or equivalent) in Physical Sciences or Engineering will be an advantage but not a necessity.
  • Full, clean UK driving license - ability to drive a Company vehicle
  • Although familiarity with laboratory equipment would be desirable, we recognize that the successful candidate will require suitable training in the operation of the apparatus and our procedures
