Job Description

Ricardo Defense is seeking a Purchasing Manager in our Troy, MI office to manage the implementation of lean initiatives in cost, productivity and quality process and systems with.  Candidates with experience in automotive component supply for military / defense customers with an understanding of FAR/DFAR and CPSR will be strongly considered over others. The Purchasing Manager will perform programmatic and corporate procurement activities, including vendor identification and qualification, development of detailed purchasing plans, negotiating subcontract and supply contracts, overseeing and monitoring supplier metrics, and component delivery oversight. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic sourcing, engineering planning and development, RFQs evaluation
  • Implementation of appropriate sourcing strategies to control the program material costs, including a lead role in cost down initiatives
  • Manufacturing and quality control, provision and setting of goals and tracking metrics
  • Lead operations management with exposure in trade compliance and logistics management
  • Maintain the master supplier with full understanding of BOM’s and costs
  • Team member and lead purchasing interface for cost proposals
  • Improve processes in multiple business areas including: supplier selection, cost optimization, material planning and transportation management
  • Negotiate strategic contracts, supplier quality, planned strategic sourcing, commercial issues and vendor procurement
  • Understand and apply contractual Terms and Conditions (supply side) and review Terms and Conditions (buy side) to identify and determine discrepancies
  • Material requirement analyzing and planning
  • Coordinate logistics delivery schedules and RAM (Return Material Authorization) with suppliers
  • Solicit bid proposals and review supplier setup and requisitions of goods for consistency
  • Research and evaluate supplier based on price, quality, selection, service, support, availability, reliability, production and distribution capabilities
  • Evaluate and monitor contract performance to ensure compliance and contractual obligations
  • Coordinate resolution of invoice discrepancies
  • Oversees and reviews computerized, or manual records of items purchased, costs, deliveries, product performance, and inventories


  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable field of study
  • Ability to obtain a Common Access Card, Government Security Clearance and maintain a clearance. 
  • 8+ years related experience
  • Proven ability to identifying new suppliers, manufacturing technologies and contracting methodologies that could bring benefit to the program and its customers
  • Skilled negotiator on price, delivery and contractual terms
  • Excellent customer relationship skills, and ability to create value in the relationship
  • Expert knowledge of accounting principles and reporting of financial data
  • Experience with Government contracting (FAR/DFAR/CAS) and procurement process (CPSR) is highly desirable
  • Excellent IT and reporting skills
  • Ability to work comfortably in a team environment, multi-task, and support concurrent requirements for different internal and external customer
  • Self-motivated individual with attention to detail, strong organizational, communication and negotiation skills necessary in a team environment
