Job Description

We have an opportunity for a Principal Consultant to support and build on our exciting range of projects in the Middle East and Asia.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to travel and work with stakeholders in cities facing some of the most challenging air pollution issues in the world.  We welcome applications from those with relevant international work experience. Applicants will have a solid understanding of international air quality policy and legislation (for example, WHO policy; funding agency policies; air quality policies, standards and regulations in relevant countries).  Applicants will also have robust experience in air quality modelling at different scales, preferably used to inform policy. Ideally, you will have experience in developing opportunities, building relationships and leading/working on proposals and projects for international clients including international development banks and agencies, NGOs, and national governments.

The Air Quality & Environment Practice team of over 120 consultants, scientists and engineers develop and apply state-of-the-art tools and techniques to deliver effective solutions to difficult air quality problems. Our team includes knowledge leaders on air quality measurement, inventory development, modelling, exposure assessment, chemical modelling, public health impacts, information management and data visualisation. We are one of Europe’s leading consultancies supporting national Governments, the European Commission and international bodies such as the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development in the development, implementation and appraisal of air quality policy.

We deliver hundreds of projects every year, to public and private sector clients in the UK and overseas, including flagship programmes such as the UK’s national air quality measurement network (AURN), the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) and the annual national scale air quality modelling assessment on behalf of UK Government. We are a lead contractor for the European Commission on air quality and emissions policy.

We have growing expertise and workload in providing technical and policy support for improving air quality in cities around the world, and in particular in the Middle East and Asia.  Working closely with colleagues in our Policy, Strategy and Economics Practice, you will be involved in analysing the impacts of new and existing policies and measures and the development of effective air quality action plans to tackle challenges at city, regional and national levels in these regions, the UK and potentially in other global markets.

Purpose

You will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of air quality management projects, providing technical input as well as carrying out stakeholder engagement, training and client liaison.  You will work closely with colleagues in the London, Harwell, Glasgow, and Manchester offices to deliver high quality solutions on a range of projects including characterizing the impacts of policy on air pollution levels, developing and modelling policy scenarios, and making intensive use of data to support decision making.

You will contribute to our business development in the Middle East and Asia, working with colleagues to build relationships with key clients, identify and develop new opportunities, write proposals and secure new wins.

The role will also require the use of air quality modelling tools, interpretation of technical data and preparation of technical reports.  You should have the ability to interact with air quality professionals including policy makers at national and/or international level and to write reports in English to a professional standard.

Key accountabilities

Specific tasks will be dependent on your level of experience but are likely to include business development and the preparation of proposals to win new contracts, managing projects to time and costs, delivering training and stakeholder engagement events, building client relationships, and the technical delivery of projects.
