Job Description


Ricardo Rail is seeking engineers with background in Functional Safety engineering to support a range of international rolling stock projects. As a qualified consultant engineer, you will have familiarity in various international standards relating to their impact rolling stock, particularly with EN50128 and/or IEC 61508.  You will be able to use this knowledge to help clients minimise risks on rolling stock.

As a project manager for relevant projects within your area of expertise, you will be required to manage the delivery of your own work to the client within the defined timescale, cost and quality.



  • To apply knowledge and professional judgement in assessing whether rolling stock systems, sub-systems or materials have been developed/supplied in accordance with international standards
  • To produce high quality, technically accurate reports and other documents in support of client projects within timescales and budgetary requirements
  • To plan and implement project and programme activities, ensuring that they are undertaken within agreed resource parameters and delivered on time
  • To provide support as required in business development activities, including contributing to proposals, and advise the appropriate manager of potential business opportunities identified.
  • Represent Ricardo Rail at industry events
  • Maintain your own competence and knowledge at the forefront of the fire engineering community.


QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED                                                               

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience in  functional safety for safety-critical systems
  • Good knowledge about EN50128 and/or IEC 61508
  • Experience in quality assurance or verification/validation related to rolling stock / automotive preferred
  • Good communication skills


Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in software ISA or software auditing or product certification
  • Experience in developing or assuring safety-critical railway software such as signalling/rolling stock/platform screen door



  • Preferably possess a signalling or rolling stock background (preferred but not essential)
  • Be able to demonstrate success in relationship building
  • Be able to liaise with customers to maintain continuous communication in the development and implementation of projects to ensure a uniformity of purpose and common targets
  • Have proven planning, problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work with other team members to identify practical and effective resolutions to performance issues and guide and/or coach others in the resolution of problems
  • Be flexible to travel as required
