Within Ricardo Energy & Environment, the Energy Practice's team consists of around 50 consultants who are highly experienced professionals specialising in techno-economic and management consultancy services for the energy sector, with particular emphasis on the power sector, renewable energy and other electricity projects. The strength of the Energy practice is our ability to combine strategic, financial/economic and technical advice as an integrated consultancy service to public and private sector clients. Our team of energy consultants are qualified in a range of commercial, engineering, economic and financial disciplines. Most of our assignments draw on expertise in several of these areas. In addition to the core team we can draw on a wide range of energy specialist associates, with whom we have long-standing working relationships. This network of relationships complements our permanent office presence in Guildford, Glasgow, Bristol, London and South Africa, expanding our reach to international energy markets: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas.


We are seeking an intelligent and self-motivated power engineer to join the Energy practice consultancy team in our Guildford office. This role will provide the perfect first step into your consultancy career in an exciting and rapidly changing sector.


Key accountabilities:

From day one, you will be part of a team supporting senior consultants in delivering projects to our clients. Successful applicants will have strong numeracy, analytical and communication skills together with a proactive, organised approach and a pride in the quality of their work. Over time you will be expected to develop a strong understanding of the energy sector - including strategic, technical, commercial and regulatory aspects.

As an analyst, you will contribute research and analysis that underpins our consultancy work. You will manage your time across several projects, contributing in all phases - from supporting the preparation of proposals to win new contracts, through researching and analysing information and data, to contributing to reports that are delivered to clients. You will be responsible for the quality and delivery of your work, and liaise with other consultants to incorporate your contribution into wider project outputs.


Key competencies and experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree (2.1 or above) and a Masters or a PhD in electrical engineering;
  • Highly competent in numerical analysis using software such as Microsoft Excel, Matlab and R;
  • Experience of network innovation projects;
  • Experience in supply and demand forecast analysis;
  • An interest in the energy and power sector;
  • The ability to effectively communicate and interact with colleagues in the practice and clients;


Skills and behaviours:

  • A high level of computer literacy, including familiarity with the full Microsoft Office software suite;
  • Knowledge of electric power systems and familiarity with some aspect of power system planning;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Be flexible, resilient and enthusiastic; and
  • Be able to work independently and demonstrate initiative, as well as operate effectively as part of a team.
