Responsible for the design of a wide range of complex mechanical components from various sectors (Engines, Vehicles, Transmissions & Hybrids) for example light duty gasoline engines to off highway transmissions.

The Senior Design Engineer will work closely with the Chief Designer or Lead Designer to take ownership of a mechanical design system as identified by the Chief Designer or Engineering Manager. Additionally, will assist the Engineering Manager in coaching other Design Engineers to develop design skills and work to the department processes.


Duties and Responsibilities

You will be working on the mechanical design of components through concept, definitive and detail design phases, as well as working in a variety of market sectors from passenger cars to industrial and defence markets. You will carry out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, basic stress calculations, FMEA’s, 2D layouts, 2D detailing, Tolerance stacks as required and agree the design approach with the project Chief or Lead Designer

Responsible for the following:

  • Managing 2 sub-ordinates, guide their career path and carry out PDR’s if required by the engineering manager
  • System and component specifications and design of plans
  • Creating 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase
  • Creating assembly drawings and bill of materials
  • Carrying out design change requests as per process
  • Maintaining up to date layout drawings and standard part libraries
  • Checking and validating design engineer’s designs and drawings as required
  • Occasional guideline ownership and CAD championing
  • Working closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly
  • Reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the Project Management teams, Chief Designer or Engineering Manager
  • Creating technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects
  • Highlighting all mechanical technical risks to the Chief Designer or Engineering Manager
  • Preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews
  • Generating minutes from design reviews if required
  • Keeping up to date with and dissemination of:
    • latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards
    • latest technology trends
    • latest developments in design tools
  • Liaising with suppliers and other Ricardo departments to ensure the required information is available when needed and customer requests are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Following departmental processes relating to management of designs (MDP)
  • Coaching and mentoring Design Engineer’s
  • Reviewing design processes and identify any updates required
  • Identifying opportunities to innovate and suggest R&D topics for further study
  • Promoting best practice use of Windchill and contribute to its development



  • Degree (Bachelor or Masters) in mechanical engineering or similar field or with equivalent experience



  • In-depth experience as a Design Engineer
  • Broad range of mechanical design knowledge preferably with experience in one of the following areas: Engines, Transmission, Vehicle, Hybrids
  • 3D CAD skills with two or more major CAD systems (e,g CREO, CATIA, NX)
  • Competent user of Windchill PLM System
  • Familiarity of technical specifications
  • Leadership of small design teams
  • Ability to understand and produce technical drawings to high standard with GD&T competency
  • Able to produce designs to specified deadlines and achieves required timescales
  • Sets an example to other design engineers in the team on best practice performance
  • Confident proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations
  • Good communication skills, dealing with other employees, external clients & suppliers
