The Water and Environment practice of Ricardo Energy & Environment, offers a comprehensive range of specialist services within the environmental consultancy sector. Nationally and internationally recognised for our expertise in planning and overseeing complex and sensitive projects, our skills have been utilised by a wide range of clients within the public and private sectors including the European Commission, government, water companies and developers.

 

Purpose:

The Water and Environment sector requires the skills of a hydrologist to help us assess the impact of changes in water company infrastructure on the environment in terms of changes in the hydrology (for flood, drought and climate change scenarios).  In addition our work covers wider infrastructure projects (e.g. for developers and airports) through to habitat restoration where understanding the impact on the flood envelope for example is necessary.  We are currently therefore looking for a surface water hydrologists with the skills to model, assess and predict a range of hydrological conditions, with a passion for business development and ideally with the ability to project manage (including financial forecasting, time budgeting and ensuring customer satisfaction).

 

The successful candidate will be part of our water team but will need to work closely with our environmental impact assessment and ecology colleagues. Additionally the role will require cross-practice working with the aim of helping to develop a portfolio of projects where hydrological expertise can be seen as an important element.  In addition were are always keen to continue to develop our international work and thus an interest in taking this forward would be a great advantage. The individual must be able to demonstrate strong technical expertise, an ability to win work, demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm to develop business opportunities and project management skills.

 

Key accountabilities:

You will provide technical advice to our team on a range of hydrology aspects.   You will input into a range of environmental assessments where understanding hydrology has an impact on habitats and flood/drought management.    You will need to be able to work effectively with water companies, developers, design engineers, contractors, planner and other regulators to help achieve positive outcomes of our projects.   You will project manage/co-ordinate a wide range of projects and have the responsibility of managing the technical work of more junior staff and sub-consultants as well as identifying and winning new business. 

 

Key competencies and experience:

Essential

Bachelors (2.1 or above) and ideally a post graduate degree with a strong background in hydrology (especially data analysis for floods and droughts, undertaking FRAs, ability to run hydrological models and the understanding FEH/FSR outputs. 
Understanding and knowledge of associated flood and drought policies and data sources in the EU and UK. 
Experience in supporting the preparation of proposals and tenders
Proven experience of leading projects from a technical perspective
Proven ability to mentor and support more junior members of the team
Ability to generate and develop new business areas
Experience of project management
A full UK driver’s license

 

Experienced in winning work and demonstrable business development understanding
Ability to  develop client networks would be advantageous
Understanding of the water industry
Experience of stakeholder engagement
